Online workshops for local authority planners on clean energy

A series of online training workshops for local authority planners working on clean energy is taking place during February and March.

As the UK accelerates towards a Clean Power and Net Zero future, local authorities are at the frontline of the energy transition.

Local Planners are now dealing with an increase in complex, technical applications for solar, battery storage, onshore wind, and network infrastructure projects. These projects are vital for decarbonising the grid, improving energy security, and delivering affordable power to communities.

Local planning teams are often stretched, with limited time and capacity to keep up with evolving policy, technical standards, and best practice.

Regen, supported by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Local Net Zero Hubs, has developed new guidance and a programme of workshops:

  • To equip planners with up-to-date, practical knowledge, so they can assess clean energy projects confidently and consistently.
  • To provide clear, accessible resources that demystify technical applications.
  • To foster peer learning and share case studies, helping planners learn from each other’s experiences and challenges.
  • To support local authorities in delivering the UK’s climate, energy, and economic ambitions.

The guidance will be published in February 2026 and shared with all participants ahead of the workshops. Over seven weeks, you’ll have the chance to join interactive sessions, ask questions, and connect with colleagues across your region and beyond.

The online training workshops will support local authority planners assessing low carbon, storage, onshore wind and network planning applications. Join other planners in your region to:

  • Discuss the key considerations for assessing these projects
  • Learn from up-to-date, expert guidance and case studies
  • Share your own experiences, challenges and questions in this area.

Sessions for local authorities in the South West are hosted by the South West Net Zero Hub, register below:

If you can’t make the above sessions, you can join any of the workshops hosted by our partner Local Net Zero Hubs across February and March. Full details and registration links below:
